Piazza di Spagna

Piazza di Spagna

Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous piazzas in Rome.

It owes its name to the Spanish Embassy building. At the centre of the piazza is the famous Barcaccia Fountain that dates back to the beginning of the Baroque period.

The monumental 135 step staircase was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII at the Jubilee in 1725. It was built to connect the Spanish Bourbon embassy (to which the piazza owes its name) to the church of Trinità dei Monti.
